Mourning jewelry, popularized by Queen Victoria, is interesting because it is not possible to reproduce the intricate designs often made with human hair. Clockwise from left: hair jewelry ring with buckle decoration, priced at $187.50. Seed pearl and amethyst Victorian ring with hallmarks, $172.50. Hair jewelry ring with a shield decoration engraved with initials. Hallmarked gold c. 1850-1880, $165.00. Hair jewelry brooch with black enamel, c.1830-40, priced at $135.00. Georgian hair brooch with faceted jet stones around the outside, $195.00.
Some antique brooches come with surprises. Coro's Duette line of brooches come apart and become separate clips but also attach to a brooch backing together. Coro Duette pin signed as such and made of sterling covered with enamel. Cute little rhinestone encrusted bees. $145.
Tins in general can vary widely in price, depending on the company that produced them. These are all makeup tins from different eras. Clockwise from top left: Lucretia Vanderbilt powder tin decorated with a butterfly, $19.95. A Lov-Lor face powder tin from France, this tin was designed by Rene Lalique, $39.00. A eyelash tin from 1916 "Eye-Lash-Ine", $59.00.
Juliana produced truly outrageously gaudy costume jewelry in the '50s, and collectors have been avidly seeking pieces. All of these pieces are Juliana, with the same amber and aurora borealis color scheme. Necklace, $125, bracelet, $65, and pin $48.
Sterling cases are a very popular area, the dance purses have interesting interiors often including miniature notepads and pens, while the cigarette cases are usually empty except for perhaps an elastic for cigarettes. From left: Sterling dance purse with leather interior, $120. Sterling dance purse with lovely floral engraving, $225. Russian silver cigarette case depicting a warrior and maiden in high relief, $265. Engraved inside with a Cyrillic inscription.
